This very much depends of one's physical requirements and type of activity we engage in. Personally, I cannot do without it. The below summarizes it quite well.

It makes sense to stretch what is tight and strengthen what is weak to bring the body into balance, rather than simply stretch because that is 'what you should do'. Stretching is important, but it needs to be used according to your personal requirements. Do not stretch just for the sake of it.
