The OP is in Zurich though so theoretically if the fish was available in Zurich the locals there should have got used to it by now.

Even then I suspect the choice was somewhat more limited than in countries with better access to the sea. It would have taken some time to get the fish to Zurich without any refrigeration so it would have smelled rather 'fishy' I imagine.
