I was told a long time ago and i cannot vouch if it is true as i'm no electrician, but it does make sense :

You need to make sure all the bulbs on a halogen installation are working all the time as if 1 bulb on a string of say 5 is broken, the other 4 get too much juice and blow quicker.

True or not, no idea, but sounds like it makes sense.

Look around you can change most halogen bulbs now with LED, it's expensive to start with, but depending how often you need to change halogen bulbs, may make sense.

Hornbach have a reasonably good selection.
