I was also director of my limited company - but of course income stopped when I left the country and I filed year-end returns of zero-in, zero-out for that year (and maybe the following one).

Being "out" now as a UK taxpayer means that you have to complete a full tax year out of the country (I believe) before you're given the expat status.
I remained a director of the UK company and received (small) dividends. It was only when the company was sold that the IR finally lost interest...
