Only paying 1 months deposit has a lot to do with this.
Insisting on a guarantor, would help you.

You should not be complaining, if you had been a UK landlord 45 years ago there were rent controls & you had sitting tenants that you could not get rid of.
Quite correct, but the deposit now has to go into a recognised official deposit, so it is not always easy to recover the full deposit. Guarantors are a grey area and can help if they are still solvent when you need to claim.
I was around when rent controls were in place, and there is talk of them being introduced again by certain parties. Here again the main problem is not the professional Landlord but the ones that do not belong to any recognised bodies and see letting as a good earner for the back pocket.
