We're actually heading back into 'normal' time (GMT +1).
It's summer time which is artificial, which I believe was created to get more logical and practical daylight hours at both ends of the day.
Winter time (compared to summer time/not changing) is also better for school children going to and coming home from school, so they can have a better chance of walking when it's not completely dark - apart from around the winter equinox.
Personally, I blame the druids.
