Must you send in the original passport? I think if you apply at a UK post office, they will check the forms are correct, inspect the current passport and send the application off to Durham.

If you have a British address you can ask for the passport to be sent to, for instance, your parent's home, and they can post it to you here - much cheaper than a courier. The new passport will run from the last day of the old passport, so you won't lose out.
