Just for the sake of absolute clarity...

If an MEP who is in favour of Brexit says that the EU is ruled over by the 'unelected' members of the EU Commission, that MEP would be saying so in the full knowledge that they belong to the only group of people who have a say if they are appointed or not?
The European Parliament overwhelmingly rejected Slovenia’s nominee to the new European Commission in October 2014, in a stinging rebuke to Jean-Claude Juncker, the incoming president who personally selected her to become one of his vice presidents.

In a vote of 112 to 13, with two abstentions, the parliament’s environment and energy committees voted that Alenka Bratusek, a former prime minister, was not qualified to become a commissioner.
The rejection followed a confirmation hearing in which she failed to show a mastery of her new portfolio, where she would have led Mr Juncker’s efforts to create an EU energy union.

In addition to its role in approving a new Commissioner, the European Parliament has the power at any time to force the entire Commission to resign through a vote of no confidence. This requires a vote that makes up at least two-thirds of those voting and a majority of the total membership of the Parliament.
While it has never used this power, it threatened to use it against the Commission headed by Jacques Santer in 1999 over allegations of corruption. In response, the Santer Commission resigned en masse of its own accord, the only time a Commission has done so.
