My husband has always driven the extra distance to allow us, as a family, to live in nature, with a house and garden. However, it depends a lot upon you and your wife's expectations. For us, it was worth it. But, if your wife is accustomed to access to the city, you may want to think about this decision.

Also, if your wife is not German speaking, you may want to place her and the baby in an area with ex-pats. Plus, she will probably be happy to have you arrive home, at a reasonable time, in the evening. It's quite dark, quiet and a little sad during winter months.
