Ministers revealed last Thursday that Brexit would involve the UK leaving Euratom, which promotes research into nuclear power and uniform safety standards.

The news poses possible problems for the building of the new Hinkley Point C station in Somerset, if new standalone nuclear cooperation treaties are not negotiated in time.

Although the short-term future of the Joint European Torus, a nuclear fusion research centre in Oxfordshire [currently the largest in Europe], is guaranteed until 2018, the withdrawal from Euratom puts its longer-term future in doubt.

Another unexpected side effect that will involve additional costs and resources.
