No Petrol/Diesel Cars Sold in France by 2040

Well, there goes the French car industry.

"No diesel car or petrol will be sold in France by 2040, announced Thursday the Minister of Transition ecological and solidarity, Nicolas Hulot. He proposed the creation of a premium to help low-income households acquire cleaner vehicles.

"We are announcing the end of the sale of gasoline and diesel cars by 2040," Nicolas Hulot said by presenting his "climate plan" at a press conference. The ex-environmental activist has admitted that this objective is "heavy", especially for car manufacturers.

It is a "real revolution", but "the conditions are there," judged Nicolas Hulot. "Our own automakers have in their boxes enough to feed and embody this promise (...) which is also a public health agenda," he added.

Vehicles before 1997

In a closer perspective, the most modest households will benefit from a "transition bonus" to get rid of their polluting cars in favor of a cleaner vehicle, he also announced.

This premium will "replace a pre-1997 diesel (vehicle) diesel, or pre-2001 gasoline, with a new or used cleaner vehicle." The Minister did not specify the amount of this premium."

They'll never manage to build enough charging stations to cope.
