but then, if it is really so, I have been looking on the map and Bern is only some 30km from Bern. Maybe we could reside in Bern. Problem solved ?
If one of those Berns is Freiburg, then yes. Instead of Bern any German speaking commune in canton Fribourg like Düdingen, Kerzers, Tafers etc. would also work. See this map http://www.fr.ch/ww/de/pub/andere_li...keit/karte.htm

But not all is lost if you wish to live in Freiburg.

The canton Fribourg on the topic of language and change of school:
http://www.fr.ch/osso/de/pub/einschu...hulbesuchs.htm

In general the student has to one schools within the school districts it lives in. Exception may be granted. Travel cost to other school will be upon parents.

Students living in the city of Fribourg/Freiburg can select their main language. German students will be assigned to district 9, French students to district 2 or 3
http://www.fr.ch/osso/de/pub/liste_d...s_fribourg.htm

The public school for the German speaking students in the city Freiburg is the Deutschsprachigen Orientierungsschule Freiburg DOSF http://www.dosf.ch/

The Freien Öffentlichen Schule Freiburg FOSF serves the communes Corminboeuf, Givisiez, Granges-Paccot, Marly, Matran, Pierrafortscha and Villars-sur-Glâne. According to the website you must check with the commune if they are willing to pay for this school.
