Re: How to Import a car

Confusion about the emissions

I'm considering buying and importing a used camper van from Germany - because the choice I have in finding just what I want is much more there.

Somewhere between 5 and 10 years old.

I spoke with my local canton vehicle office about it (in my poor French) and he said it was all fine except an issue about the vehicle emissions certificate.

He explained that people have been caught out and been unable to register vehicles in Switzerland at all due to some dates that I could not quite understand.

I think he was trying to explain to me that I need to check the dates of the vehicle's certificate regarding emissions and its registration date, against a list (which he had in a binder that listed standards that had some sort of expiry date).

He gave me an anecdote of a large dealer that had imported several hundred vehicles who got caught out and ended up with vehicles that couldn't be registered in Switzerland.

Does anyone have any idea what he was trying to tell me?
