Weird little aside... I flew into Manchester via Dusseldorf last night, and everyone's passports were checked at the gate as we disembarked, then again at passport control. Has anyone else has encountered this?
Had similar* in the 80s flying into Frankfurt from Africa. They did the disembarkation check in a tunnel, with machine guns very much at the ready. Different times though.

* In my case passport control wasn't until I reached the UK on a connecting flight.

Nowadays probably looking for people switching passports to get around qualifying days in the country, given the new tax residency rules.
