Gastroenteritis just means inflammation of the gut. I could be caused by anything (norovirus is the prime candidate at this time of year).
Theoretically - you're right. But even older than 6 months, young children (especially toddlers) tend to dehydrate pretty fast. That is not the only bug btw. After episodes of vomiting etc if he kid becomes lethargic and not the usual active self you really need to take him or her to an emergency room. I mean, I just would't risk to treat something like this at home.
