The last time this happened was when the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano grounded flights across Europe and the northern Atlantic. The government have a duty of care to repatriate British nationals if they are left stranded owing to an act of the government themselves.

During the ash cloud, the company I worked for chartered a fleet of coaches and sent them to various key business locations across Europe, in an effort to get as many of our business clients back to the UK as possible, particularly seeing as the ash cloud coincided with national rail strikes across France and Spain. This was done at zero cost to the clients, but proved to be seriously beneficial in boosting client loyalty.
