Early detection is key for the survivability of most cancers that spread (relatively) quickly. With oral cavity and pharynx cancers, an early detection (i.e. at stage 1) raises the 5-year survivability rate to 75-95%. And the good news is that newer techniques using blue-light fluorescence can aid the dentist in early identification; we have been using such device as part of the regular oral examinations for the last 6 years.
