Well Barnier says the Backstop isn't for renegotiation and this is before May and her renegotiation team fly to Brussels.

Now rumour has it that the British are about to play dirty with Ireland. As they reckon Dublin is the
weakest link in getting them to cave in over their insistence on the backstop.

Apparently the UK is mulling the idea of using the Cold War era arts of persuasion on Southern Ireland.
Like greasing the palms of a number of Senior Southern Irish politicians or ensnare a few of them in a
Russian style honey-trap. In order for them to drop their insistence on the backstop in the
UK - EU Withdrawal Agreement.
Some say the UK already have 'agents in place' to do the dirty work for them, if necessary.
