It would help to know where you are going (and the airlines involved). If you are intransit directly to another country, Fiji or New Zealand or ..., then it is almost certain your bag will be checked through to your connecting flight.

If your connection is to another Australian city, it is almost certain that you will have to collect your baggage, at this first point of entry, and clear it through customs.

Some airlines do not ‘interline’ and not all airlines have interline agreements with all other airlines. Depending on the circumstances you may have to re-checkin with the connecting airline.
