Well, that's the latest version.

If nothing helps, try making a backup with iTunes and then factory-resetting your phone. Then, restore from that backup.

People who have the previous generation iPhones are quite happy with iOS12 and the general consensus seems to be that this is one of the best updates (if not the best) ever.

I can't speak from personal experience (I had an iPhone 4S until the beginning of this year, when I finally had enough of it and upgraded to an XR).
But I think a co-worker also has an iPhone 6 which he complained about a lot. He did acknowledge that upgrading to iOS 12 improved the performance.

We'll have to see how the current generation holds up over the next five or six years.
