If you're at least 24, you can do A directly. If you're under 24, you can only do A-restricted, which will automatically become full A after 2 years.

But for A or A-restricted you need to pass an exam at some time (you can ride for practice before). I also first thought about only doing A1 because you can't really fail that, and to later upgrade to full A, but in the end I decided for full A directly, although I also failed the test the first time: I wasn't avoiding markings and manhole covers enough, and the examiner decided I also need more practice with a pillion (yes, the examiner will ride on your back as a pillion passenger).
