Another textbook example is what Apple did under Spindler and Amelio. They took massive margin cuts in return for minimal growth in market share. The damage was huge and the company would probably have gone under had Steve Jobs not come back and reversed all that.
Contrariwise the Japanese companies in UK had great success with low price cars and motorbikes and today just look at Aldi and all those "outlet" stores.
