Could anyone please share their experience or knowledge of the process/steps required to change cantons with a C permit (non-EU)?

I am trying to relocate from Zurich to Geneva and getting conflicting information from my Gemeinde and OCPM regarding the need for "pre-approval" to move as non-EU, when to register out of original canton, etc.
