I agree with your reasoning. But your initial assumption, your Ausgangslage, is incorrect.
OP's claim is literally that the closing came in "perfect English".

Why else would he reply "NEIN" (shouted, reportedly, which makes perfect sense btw) when asked if it's ok for her to use English?
