I would like to think that you're right, and it is refreshing to hear the noise coming from Brussels is a lot different to the drunken threats of Ms Von der Leyen's predecessor. I however think this is just the niceties as the EU Commission now realise they are dealing with a very different UK Government and one with the freedom to walk away from negotiations now that the Withdrawal agreement will be signed. Boris Johnson has made it clear that he wishes for the UK to diverge from the EU so either the EU has to eliminate one of its red lines or there will not be a trade deal.
I also expect it to me much harder for the EU to maintain a united front in the trade negotiations as all the states have completely different objectives. This is a different situation to the Withdrawal Agreement where their objectives were largely aligned (money, Ireland, rights of citizens).
Did you only read the headline in that article too?
