Tax declaration in GE - am I understanding this correctly?

I'm not taxed at source anymore (got a C permit). Here's my understanding of what that means. I'd appreciate any comments. (Yes, I will call and talk to them directly, but with my not-great french I'd like to have a basic understanding beforehands).

I do the "simulation fiscale" on the canton's site, guesstimating as best I can my upcoming earnings and so forth for the coming year. Once I submit that, they'll send me 10 bills to pay throughout the year.

As I understand this is pretty much all "voluntary" - I can pay more, I can pay all at once in advance and not pay anything the rest of the year, I can pay less or even nothing; in the end it's all summed up at next year's tax season and appropriate returns/bills are issued.

Do I have glaring misunderstanding here?

It all seems pretty straightforward, but there are ample opportunities for misunderstanding, so is it maybe wiser to just find a tax advisor to help out, or is it really pretty much as simple as it sounds?
