Learning to communicate, understanding how people think are not taught in STEM courses, so liberal arts are a valuable component of education. And logic is often taught as a component of philosophy.
The system where I am from makes stem majors take humanities courses and vice versa, the clear distinction stem/hum is no longer there, hasn't been maybe 15 years or more. I camped out at both since my degrees are so transdisciplinary. It is a general trend.

As per the monster guy the article is about, here in Europe you couldn't blame the school nor parental neglect of students who aren't minors I don't think.
