Maybe its also perceived risk vs real risk.

Of course there are lots of outdoor types in the US, who produce at least some of their own food, or hunt maybe, or at least understand nature and go for hikes or go camping or something. But there are also lots of types living in total isolation from nature. Who live in an air conditioned house surrounded by an astroturf lawn, who drive to work in an air conditioned car, who eat industrial food they buy in some huge air conditioned supermarket and that all tastes exactly the same, and if once they see a cockroach (on their porch, not inside the house) they won't stop until they've used an entire can of some terrible poison.

It's easy to tell people like that, that nature is somehow inherently evil and the more crap you put in your food, the safer it is for you.
