Actually, originally the Syrian rebels were supported by the mainly Sunni Arab states.

Of course, if you were so inclined you could link this all back to the end of WWI when the League of Nations was established. It came up with mandates to divide the conquered Ottoman land.

Each mandate was supposed to be ruled by Britain or France. It was the League of Nations that ended up drawing the borders in the Middle East.

However, the borders didn't consider the people living there, along with ethnic, geographic, and religious boundaries.

Like Putin with the Soviet Union, Erdogan wishes to restore the Ottoman empire.

The weirdest part of all this for me is that Assad worked for some years in the UK as an ophthalmologist.... He should have stayed there!!
