In the past, when we received cheques, we did what the bank would do, and send them by registered post back to the bank on which the cheque was issued, with an instruction to transfer the amount to our account, giving full details, SWIFT/BIC (or now IBAN) etc. This was not only quicker, but much cheaper as well.

However, be aware, that part of the charge the bank makes is the (in this case UK's) bank charge for an overseas remittance and that of their correspondent bank if one is involved.
