You have one month's notice (and I take it you did not decide/give in notice yet) and you'll be back end of May. That is one month's rent you would pay while not being here. Is it really that high that you can't afford it?
Seriously, any other time - sure, your plan is fine. But now?

I'd just pay that rent and enjoy my time where ever you're going, knowing what ever happens, I got somewhere to go back to (even sooner if something goes really wrong).
