I was surprised by that too but it's an agreement from 2002 between the EU and EFTA and Switzerland. 4 countries have made agreements with Switzerland giving retirees the possibility to opt out of the LAMal, but not the UK. You can read about it here :

You're right about the doctor. However, the Swiss won't let you get away with the LAMal contributions during retirement if you're going to be in the UK.
