I was surprised by that too but it's an agreement from 2002 between the EU and EFTA and Switzerland. 4 countries have made agreements with Switzerland giving retirees the possibility to opt out of the LAMal, but not the UK. You're right about the doctor. However, the Swiss won't let you get away with the LAMal contributions during retirement if you're going to be in the UK.
