I suspect the EU member states would have never agreed to the 200-mile EEZ in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982 if the UK hadn't been part of the EEC at the time.

You are right however problem with fishing is that it is such a politically charged issue. The SNP are just waiting to pounce if fishing is sold out as fishing is one of the big Brexit benefits for Scotland. It also sends out the wrong message if, for example, it looks as if the UK is selling out fishing for big corporations or banks in London.
But the banks are getting zero benefits from the EU at the moment. The EU negotiators have masterly played out the UK. They have managed to keep the all the focus on the drama of fishing, whilst there has been absolutely zero talk about granting the UK financial services free access to the EU.
