In Japan more people died from suicide in October than the total number that are said to have died from covid in the whole of 2020. There was a huge spike in the number of suicide deaths, particularly women who, compared to men, disproportionately work in sectors that were heavily impacted by lockdowns. Japan has a history of high suicide rates but until 2019 this had been steadily decreasing.
