Re: thinking about moving to Uster?

View Post
hi all,

I found a new job in Zurich and after reading here and there, we decided that Uster is the place we will move to: prices not outrageous, town not too small, there's the WAC.
I've been looking for flats and I'm surprised by the price range, as for about the same size (100-115m2) there can be 1000CHF difference.
So I wonder, is there any bad area in Uster, where a family of 5 (my eldest will be 7y old soon) should better not live?
Especially as we don't speak German yet.

I live in the smaller village just next door to Uster (called Greifensee) and often go into Uster for various things. I have never seen any areas in Uster that look like they would be "bad" areas; though some apartment complexes there are obviously nicer than others. You might want to try to not live too close to the main train station there or right within that area in general ("downtown Uster"), as it can become quite crowded, with lots of traffic, etc. due to shopping and a lot of people coming there from surrounding villages.

I have a son who is now nine years old, and a few things that I would consider is whether or not you want a garden apartment, with a private garden area for the kids to play in (a kiddie pool in the summer, etc.), though garden apartments can be a bit difficult to find here. Also be sure the nearby area is safe for kids to play in, especially when they're older and no longer being supervised while playing outside (but I know you know that already).

Uster in general, though, is a great little city. It has an indoor public pool that is really nice as well as a beach and public pool area that is right on the shore of Lake Greifensee, which is great for swimming. There is also a hospital in Uster, with an emergency room, etc.

The WAC is really nice. My son took a week-long science course there in robotics and programming for kids last Autumn. I should really try to become more active in the WAC once this pandemic is over.

Feel free to send me a message if I can be of help with anything.
