UK always taxed wine higher than beer for political reasons, no reason why beer drinkers should not pay their 'fair share'. France on the other hand charges 23% employee contributions on ALL income + 46% employee contributions, believing that the poor should pay their way too. Makes the Swiss rate of around 6% (roughly half the UK rate) for both look like a huge deal.
I was very pleasantly surprised by wine prices here compared to the UK and Ireland.
