Wha? Unless you're in the habit of eating off the floor, I can't for they life of me think what could possibly be unhygienic about it.

From the noise perceptive, yes, difficult. Live and let live is my motto, but I've not infrequently had to ask guests here to quieten down after ten, with walls that seem to have been designed to transmit sound rather then deadening it. Different situation, of course, but yeah, if you want to stay where you are you're just going to have to take steps (or not) to be quiet.
