No idea about raclette, but a quick bbq on the balcony is exactly what we use it for. It's perfect for a couple pieces of meat or bratwurst, it takes only a few minutes (like, five, if even that) to produce full heat. If the coal is dry there's pretty much no smoke in our experience. Using up last year's can be a different matter though.

The lotusgrill design seems to be less than perfect to boil a pot of water because it diverts the hot air away from the center, and the center plate isn't completely flat so there's very little direct contact with the pot that transfers the heat directly. I would expect something like this to be significantly faster, combining the two may yield the best results when camping (if you have space).
