As we got the allowance for 2020 paid in 2021 and I am filling in the tax declaration for 2020:

- is the cantonal child allowance of 200fr/month in Zurich taxed? i.e. should I add it as income?

I haven't seen any section in the tax form to include it, but maybe it falls under income given that it is paid out via employers... ?

BDO Switzerland says (translated):

"Child allowances

Child allowances and any family allowances are not subject to AHV, but they are taxable income. The child allowances of employed persons are shown under item 1 in the salary statement together with the salary. They are therefore not usually visible to the taxpayer.

Self-employed persons must also declare child allowances in their tax return. Child allowances are best entered in the private account, where they are clearly visible when preparing the tax return. If the child allowances are transferred to a private account, their declaration in the tax return must not be forgotten. If the child allowances are booked to the income statement, AHV is unnecessarily deducted from the corresponding amount. Often, the child allowances are recorded under a collective item "Other income"."
