Re: Any restriction on the size of apartment depending on persons residing?

I got a manual for a B-permit without a gainful employment for canton Ticino.

I don't know if it applies for your situation, but it says here for a 3-person domestic community they require at least: three rooms without kitchen and bathroom, 24 sq meters of individual space (bedrooms), 19 sq m. of community space, a 5.5 sq m kitchen, 4 sq m bath and a total of 60 sq m minimum.

They have also worksheets to figure out if your income, assets, health insurance and other things are adequate or not.

The forms are in Italian at http://www.ti.ch/ricerca/ then enter "soggiorno grandezza delle abitazione" without the quotes.

I think the easiest thing to do is to ask the authorities, it's a simple, straightforward question.
