Floating down big rivers

I cycled from Baden to Zug last year on a hot summers day.

We followed the river for a large proportion of the ride and saw quite a few groups spending the day floating down the river in plastic, dingy's, rubber rings and inflatable chairs. They were enjoying the odd beverage which were attached to the boat in a net to keep cool and stopping off in various places for bbq's.

This looked to be the perfect way to spend a relaxing day with friends.

Has anyone done this? If so, please advise on which rivers you used & good get on/get off points. Any suggestions for train stops would be greatly appreciated.

Are the riveres in these parts generally pretty tame in terms of white water?

Are there any places to watch out for

Thanks in advance!
