The plane in question is just over 19 years old, entered service in May 1990 and was leased and subleased to a number of airlines until Yemenia acquired it in Sep 1999. Source http://aviation-safety.net/database/...?id=20090630-0

According to the BBC the french authorities inspected the plane in 2007 and noticed a number of faults. Since then the plane had not returned to france. Although airline itself was not on the blacklist, it was subject to stricter checks, and was also about to be interviewed by the EU safety commitee. Hmmm, not wanting to jump the gun here, but it seems there are questions over Yemenia's mantenance record.
