An SBB half price card won't help you with Basel trams - no discounts
The monthly tram pass - known as the "U-Abo" (==Umweltschutzabonnement = environmental protection subscription) (if you buy an annual one you pay 10x rather than 12x the monthly fee) is also good for all trains and buses within the North West Switzerland region (TNW) - which covers quite a large area.

The half-price card (known as the Halbtax) is good for train journeys outside the region - and if I recall correctly does get you half price on single tram and bus journeys within your place of residence - but that makes no odds if you have the U-Abo.

Of course, if like me you dislike travelling with poor people, you can also get a first class GA (General pass) from the rail company which is good for first-class travel throughout Switzerland; and you can use it on most other modes of public transport. Just a pity that trams and buses don't have a first class section.

Cheers,
Nick
