Several agencies that are based in Lausanne have a stipulation that if you apply for an apartment, and are lucky enough to be awarded it, if you then decide not to take it then they will charge you a fee (about 50 to 100 CHF). However, a lot of agencies don't have this fee, and some who do state it in the application documentation then don't charge it when the situation arises.

If you want a place quickly, then the only way to do it is to apply for multiple places. If you happen to get more than one and you are charged a fee for the one that you turn down, you should still be happy to have found a place and shouldn't worry too much about the fee. Unfortunately, there is little you can do to complain about this - the agencies have ALL of the power in this situation and the applicants have virtually zero.
