Can anyone confirm/deny this? (Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere - I couldn't find it).

I am considering getting a mobile phone contract, after 2yrs on PAYG. As I want an iphone and the charges for the handset on a 2yr contract are enormously different to a 1yr contract I was wondering what would happen if I took out the 2yr contract and then left before that expired?

Any information is gratefully received!
As an update to all who are interested, here are the cancellation terms as specified in Orange contracts for early termination:

-CHF100 for contracts less than 1mth
-CHF300 for contracts of 12mths
-CHF500 for contracts of 24mths

BUT...if you have an iphone, then the fees are:

-CHF600 for contracts of 12mths
-CHF800 for contracts of 24mths

They make no mention in this document of early termination if you are leaving the country, however they could stick to these terms as the contract language is pretty clear.

The interesting one is the 600CHF charge for a 12mth iphone contract. If you took out a price plan of 49CHF/month the cancellation charge equates to more than 12mths of the subscription payments! On the 24mth contract it equates to over 16mths worth of payments. Once you've passed the point of having the phone for 8mths you're better off paying the monthly fee, unless you can negotiate out of the contract.
