PhD's are 10 a penny, potential PhD's less. PhD students are the only chance a prof has to get some half way decent research done and even then its touch and go

True true.

Or you forget the fulltime student life and go for distance while getting a normal job and keeping your PhD field you picked and research yours. And have a family. It's a bitch, loads of travels but some go for it.
