I can only speak for Geneva but the tax rate changes when you get married because with the two salaries, you fall into a different tax bracket and even if you marry in december 2006, you will be taxed for the whole of 2006 as married.
Until 2009, it was even fiscally disadvantegeous to be married because you paid more federal taxes. This year, the tax burden was lessened slightly.
