Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

We stay at a family friends hut in a village in the Ambri valley between Airolo & Faido sometimes, so know this area & the M'way queues well.

Top Tip for driving north from Milan/Bellinzona - Gottard:
The last Exit off the motorway before Airolo is Quinto & the jam usually starts just after this exit: i.e no escape.
If you Exit at Quinto, you can whizz along the Blue route 2 through Ambri, Piotta & rejoin the M'way at Airolo or carry on over the pass.
Seriously, just do it in future. It takes about 15/20 mins and will save you hours every time. If it's really bad or a known holiday, then exit even earlier at Faido or even Biasca - it really is worth it!
We were at the hut this weekend & the jam we saw on the m'way on Saturday was shocking - it was all the way down to the elvevated sections of m'way near Faido (about 15km)
