Re: Opinions about Cairo ( Travelling during 1st Week on Jan 2011.)

We went end of October 2001. The weather was nice and cool, like Spring.

We hired a cab with the driver for a day about 100 Egyptian pounds and he took us to Ginza, Saqqara(older pyramids) and Memphis. Beware though as people will try to lure you into papyrus or perfume bottle shops (for which they get huge commissions). We bought a small (about 20-25 cm high) Alabaster vase for 20 Egyptian pounds (4 pounds = 1 US dollar at the time) after much haggling even though we weren't interested but the guy kept dropping the price. I'd say Saqqara is a really nice place to visit, very interesting. We took the train (Nefartari car) to Luxor and it was alright, with lots of tourists in the car although took around 8-9 hours. In Luxor, took a day tour to see the Karnak temple and the tombs which were really interesting. We also took a 2-day Nile cruise to Aswan. The Luxor part of our travels were organized by a tour guy called Ahmed whom we met at the Luxor train station.

Prices might be different now though as the country was suffering from shortage of tourists due to 9/11 attacks at the time. For us, it was a very cheap trip as we were on a budget at the time.
