Has anyone really left because the front page isn't as pretty as it used to be? Is anyone really posting less for that reason? Is it really effecting anyone's enjoyment of the forum to any significant degree?

There are several things on EF that are more annoying that the front page. They don't (often) drive people away in hordes.

Sorry to pick on your post PJ, it was just the easiest to find of a few making similar comments. It's nuthin' personal.

I doubt it. In fact the whole thing went exactly as I expected:-

1. Surprise
2. Uproar
3. Threatened and/or very brief flounces.
4. Calming down
5. Business as usual.

And here we are.

I left. I haven't posted here since before Christmas.

I haven't a clue who's making all these posts in my name.

Goodness, that's what happens when you don't get into EF for a few weeks! I thought I'd pressed the wrong button, it's gone all different. Don't know if I like it or not, haven't tried to navigate my way around yet. Hope it's progress for the better and not just for the sake of it.

OK, let's go see what I can find.....

Happy New Year everyone, by the way, from Bonnie (and sunny) Scotland!

(But I'm coming for my very first Basel Fasnacht in March!)

Pam

That's part of the the new look. When someone presses 'submit reply' the computer runs through the data bank and picks out a name indiscriminately. That's why we all seem to be acting so oddly recently.

Actually, the one thing that still irks me - I'm only telling you 'cos I know you care - is the fact that you can't jump to the last post. You can still do that in the individual "Forums" and "New posts", using the icon, but AFAIK you can't on the front page, you always end up being taken the first post, which is a bit crap TBH. The crapyness of this missing feature is further highlighted by the fact that you can see the first few lines of what is - purportedly - the latest post on that thread.

click on the date. on it, and you are taken to the last one.

Not particularly intuitive, but that is indeed the way to do it.

Hadn't seen that date. I saw the post-creation date, but that's not linked to anything. Ta muchly. So I withdraw my comment about there being no link, but why not keep the icon for consistency?

Because "consistent" and "intuitive" is completely overrated and so 2010...

This is now fixed. We had to remove the following code from the CSS:

/* ***** Added M.Fyvie 08.05.05 for IE6 bug workaround ***** */ html { overflow-x: hidden; }
I don't know what bug was being worked around. But whatever it was, it's probably less critical now than it was five years ago, what with fading use of IE6.
When I see this come up and Mark name plain to see, it makes me think would he have wanted this?

Advertising plastered all over the forum, I don't for one believed he would. Then again forums evolve over time some for the better some for the worse.

The great thing about this forum is it's simplicity to use, and it's layout don't forget that in a rush to re-brand, re-organise and saturate with ad's.

People still use IE6 mainly at companies with dinosaur IT departments that can't be bothered to patch/update anything! So think again..

No, he was always against such a thing but then it was run as a not-for-profit. We struggled to keep the EF online with donations alone and Mark used his own money when the purse was empty.

Currently the ads aren't intrusive - I never touch the front page so never see them.

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

Quite honestly, we don't know what would have happened to the Forum had Mark not died. He was getting married, would probably have had children. He might well have moved away from Switzerland and wanted to spend more time on his diving. He might have acquired other new interests.

I know people who have run their lives round a specific project, put all their time, money, energy into it, for maybe five or ten years, but one day, especially if the project they have started began to change in some way, they want a new project, a fresh start, they want to try something else. And if there is someone willing to take over the old job, then they pass on the responsibility and the power to them.

I'm glad the Forum is still here. Improvements can still be made but I'm glad someone is putting up the money to pay for Forum as it is.

Updates on the new start page

Has anyone else noticed that the updates on the fabulous new start page are out of synch with the actual content of the posts?

I've observed it for quite some time, but the latest example was a thread where I had posted a comment about coop restaurants. Some time later, Deep Purple posted another comment. The thread moved to the top of the start page - but the actual text extract shown was from my post, not from DPs. Bit silly, no?

Also, in the last week or so (I've been out of the country before that) I've noticed a large number of short-duration downtimes on the forum. Englishforum.ch becomes unreachable - while all other websites work just fine for me. Maybe this has always happened and I've only noticed now because I'm home sick, bored, and clicking here every 5 minutes, but that seems to be new, too.

Cheers
Lance

Re: Updates on the new start page

There is a regular downtime around 3:30am during the backup process, but it ought not to last more than a few minutes. Other downtime occurances are a force majeure and are usually tackled quickly. We shouldn't be experiencing too many of those, though.

As for the homepage... best to just avoid it

Indeed he was also due to start a new job after returning from what was an ill-fated diving vacation. He wasn't hands-on with the forum for a lot of time anyway - just like Editor Bob, he spent more time on other interests once he had a team to represent him.

Only last week something far more serious on the Internet happened. Google moved their "Reader" link a little and there was great upset. Are we becoming change-averse in this technical era?

I've confirmed this now. There are threads on the home page (such as the article about the woman's blog which rags on EF) that stretch onto two pages, yet the home page shows a total of 1 post for them.

I'm guessing this has something to do with the recent and sudden decline in the number of overall posts; more so than the horrible look, people just don't see any activity, so they don't click into the threads to read the newest responses and post their own.

It's just a guess, but it seems like it'd be worth fixing. EF has become really quite dull in the last month or so (but that could be an unrelated temporary condition, I don't know).

Regarding the updating of the front page, I do know that the process for selecting posts that appear on the front page was altered. This is probably the reason for the delay that you're seeing. Personally I'd recommend that regular users use "New Posts" as the entry point to the forum.

As for the decline in the number of posts, well that's typical for this time of year. Always over the December January period the number of posts drop dramatically. You can see the trend on the attached chart. Looking at that it would appear that the number of posts for Jan-Feb is back up again.
